SUMMARY:NBRACER at NetworkNature Annual Event 2025 – Choose Nature
DESCRIPTION:On 16 September 2025\, the NBRACER team participated in the NetworkNature Annual Event 2025 – “Choose Nature”\, held in Brussels. This key gathering brought together a wide spectrum of stakeholders from across Europe to explore how Nature-based Solutions (NbS) can help forge resilient economies and combat biodiversity loss. \n\n\n\nA Gathering with Purpose\n\n\n\nThe theme “Choose Nature” underscored the urgency of aligning economic growth\, human wellbeing\, and ecological integrity. With biodiversity in decline and ecosystem functions under pressure\, the event provided a platform to reflect on both the risks of inaction and the opportunities of acting now. \n\n\n\nThrough four thematic sessions\, Work with and for nature\, Trust nature and people\, Invest in nature\, and Partner with nature\, speakers shared case studies\, insights\, and pathways forward. These conversations emphasised that NbS are not just a theoretical concept\, but a practical means to deliver solutions across climate adaptation\, sustainable urban development\, finance\, innovation\, and wellbeing. \n\n\n\nNBRACER’s Role: The NbS Fresco© & Collaboration\n\n\n\nOne of the highlights of the event for NBRACER was the presentation and prototype testing of the NbS Fresco©\, an interactive workshop tool designed to help diverse actors understand and apply NbS in urban\, rural\, coastal\, and marine landscapes. The tool aims to foster collaborative learning and to make NbS more accessible and actionable across different contexts. The feedback from Task Force members and partners has already started informing improvements with a final version expected early 2026. \n\n\n\nParticipating in the event also allowed NBRACER to engage directly with the NetworkNature Labs\, other Horizon Europe projects\, and stakeholders interested in peer-to-peer exchange\, capacity building\, data tools\, and awareness raising. These interactions reaffirmed NBRACER’s commitment to supporting cross-project collaboration and ensuring that NbS knowledge is shared broadly beyond the project circle. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLooking Forward\n\n\n\nAs the world faces ecological and social challenges of increasing scale\, the NBRACER project is more determined than ever to support pathways that integrate nature into decision making\, finance\, business\, and everyday life. The momentum built at NN Choose Nature event will carry into developing the NbS Fresco to its final form\, as well as promoting tools\, partnerships\, and dialogues that scale Nature-based Solutions across Europe and globally. \n\n\n\nTogether\, we choose nature. Together\, we scale impact.

SUMMARY:NBRACER at TerraEnVision 2025
DESCRIPTION:On July 2025 NBRACER will participate in the call for abstracts at the TERRAenVISION conference. \n\n\n\nMET5: Transformative Nature-Based Solutions for building climate resilience and addressing environmental challenges \n\n\n\nClimate change is exerting profound and far-reaching effects on socioecological systems worldwide. This global phenomenon affects various ecosystems\, from terrestrial to aquatic\, with significant consequences for biodiversity\, natural resource availability\, and the well-being of human societies. The challenges posed by climate change are multifaceted. They include rising global temperatures\, altered precipitation patterns\, more frequent and severe weather events (such as floods\, heatwaves\, droughts\, wildfires)\, shifts in species distributions\, and disruptions to ecosystem services. These changes not only jeopardize the ecological integrity of natural systems but also have cascading effects on societies that rely on these systems for food\, water\, and livelihoods. Moreover\, current risks are on a trajectory of escalation\, with projections indicating not only a further increase in intensity and frequency\, but also the emergence of new ones. In this evolving landscape\, a systemic transition to increase climate resilience is imperative. Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) offer innovative and holistic approaches for mitigating and adapting to climate change\, fostering sustainable socio-ecological systems\, and enhancing the well-being of different communities. In this context\, we explore the transformative potential and enabling conditions for NBS in building climate resilience and simultaneously benefiting the society\, environment and economy. In this setting\, this session invites presentations that explore innovative approaches and applications highlighting the integration of NBS in pathways towards climate resilience. By leveraging cutting-edge digital tools and models to evaluate and predict the multi-hazard risk mitigation role and effectiveness of NBS across scales\, this session embraces a holistic perspective that considers both the natural and societal dimensions of the analysed environments. This session is looking for examples to foster discussions that advance our collective understanding on effective and sustainable adaptation practices in socio-ecological systems.

SUMMARY:NBRACER at ESP 11 World Conference
DESCRIPTION:From global to local ecosystem services: pathways to Nature-based Solutions inspired from Down Under \n\n\n\nSESSION DESCRIPTION \n\n\n\nT18 Promoting Nature-Based Solutions for climate resilience: Identifying and overcoming social\, institutional\, cultural and financial barriers \n\n\n\nAbstract:Nature-based solutions (NBS) are increasingly recognized critical for addressing climate resilience and improving biodiversity. However\, their successful implementation often encounters significant social\, institutional\, and cultural barriers. Based on work and experiences from Australia and from Europe\, this workshop aims to foster an interactive dialogue on these barriers and build the capacity of participants to identify and overcome them effectively. \n\n\n\nThe session is divided into three interconnected parts: \n\n\n\nBarriers to nature-based solutions development – introduced by Russ Wise – CSIROIn this segment\, we introduce the VRK (Values-Rules-Knowledge) diagnostic tool\, which provides a structured framework for analyzing the multifaceted barriers hindering the promotion and implementation of NBS. This tool enables participants to explore how competing values\, conflicting institutional rules\, and gaps in knowledge can impede progress. Practical examples will illustrate how the VRK model has been applied in real-world contexts to uncover hidden dynamics and inform strategic actions. Participants will jointly work on some practical cases to test and learn to work with the VRK tool. \n\n\n\nEnablers for Nature-Based Solutions Development – introduced by Ingrid Coninx\, Wageningen University & ResearchDrawing on insights from the EU-funded NBRACER project\, this segment showcases collaborative approaches between scientists and public officers to facilitate the adoption of NBS. By focusing on real-life case studies\, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how partnerships across disciplines and sectors can build the institutional capacity and community support needed to address barriers. Specific strategies\, such as co-design processes\, governance innovations\, and community engagement practices\, will be highlighted to inspire actionable pathways forward. \n\n\n\nFinancial barriers and enablers for nature-based solutions in rural areas – Ebony Greaves CEO of SEAOAK Consulting. This session will discuss how finance and access to capital can be a barrier for nature-based solutions development in rural areas and the role of the agricultural industry in moving large-scale NBS forwards\, as part of their agricultural business. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis workshop offers a unique opportunity for practitioners\, policymakers\, and researchers to exchange experiences\, explore ways forward and gain practical tools to advance NBS in the regions that they are working on. By equipping participants with the skills to identify and address these so-called intangible barriers\, the session aims to empower the participants to be more equipped to drive transformative change towards a more climate-resilient and equitable future\, when they are working with or in regions. \n\n\n\nGoals and objectives of the session: This workshop offers a unique opportunity for practitioners\, policymakers\, and researchers to exchange experiences\, explore ways forward and gain practical tools to advance NBS in the regions that they are working on. They will immediately practice to work with these tools during the workshop\, to enable a certain level of capacity building during the conference itself. \n\n\n\nPlanned output / Deliverables: Wrap-up of the practical tools to overcome barriers and summary of the reflections from the workshop participants – written in a longread that will be shared on the websites of CSIRO\, WUR and SEAOAK.

DESCRIPTION:The integration of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) into frameworks furthering the sustainable development of the planet is essential. They are powerful tools in the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss\, and can have a measurable impact on human and environmental health. By working with communities to design and implement NbS interventions\, it is possible to ensure a fairer and more effective approach to the sustainable development of the future. Cities are at the forefront of this work.  \n\n\n\nOne tool has already been highlighted by the EU in multiple strategies and pieces of legislation: the Urban Nature Plan (UNP) Framework. Want to learn what this framework could do for your city?  \n\n\n\nThen come to our interactive session entitled “Urban Nature: From Plan to Action” at the 10th Conference on Sustainable Cities & Towns in Aalborg on 1-3 October 2024. In this session\, participants will work directly with cities to review the UNP framework and the draft UNP self-assessment\, seeing it in action in different contexts. \n\n\n\nWhy should you attend? \n\n\n\nThis interactive session will bring together different stakeholders to discuss enablers and barriers to integrating nature-based solutions into cities\, and will explore how the UNP framework can help. This session is for anyone interested in bringing existing plans into alignment in order to further urban resilience and health\, and restore and protect biodiversity.  \n\n\n\nWhat will you learn? \n\n\n\nYou will learn about the UNP development process\, gaining insight from cities that already have experience with the process. Furthermore\, there will be the opportunity to hear from cities that have not yet worked with the framework\, as they reflect on how the framework might be integrated into their ongoing NbS work.  \n\n\n\nDon’t miss this opportunity to participate in an event that promises to inspire and empower. Come to Aalborg\, join our session and take the first step towards understanding how UNPs can help build a sustainable future.

SUMMARY:European Urban Resilience Forum 2024: Connecting Cities\, Building Resilience\, Forging the Future
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe 2024 edition of the European Urban Resilience Forum (EURESFO) will take place on 26-28 June in the European Green Capital 2024\, Valencia\, Spain. \nSince its creation in 2013\, the European Urban Resilience Forum (EURESFO) has become a pivotal space for city representatives\, experts\, and stakeholders to converge and tackle the challenges posed by a rapidly changing climate and multiple crises. As we gear up for the 11th edition of EURESFO\, on 26 – 28 June in Valencia\, Spain\, the stage is set for an enriching exchange of ideas\, solutions\, and strategies. \nOrganised by ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability and the European Environment Agency (EEA)\, it has been acting as a unique exchange platform in the field of resilience. The event brings together city representatives\, experts\, and stakeholders from local and regional institutions to discuss strategies\, initiatives\, and actions affiliating to climate change adaptation\, disaster management\, and the cultivation of urban resilience. \nThe 2024 edition of EURESFO will be built around three key thematic streams and forth special thematic stream\, each addressing crucial aspects of resilience\, sustainable development\, and recovery. The first stream focuses on multilevel governance\, cooperation\, and the imperative of a just transition. The second thematic stream delves into water resilience and the promotion of the Blue Economy within and beyond the Mediterranean region. The third stream aims at enabling the transformation towards resilient\, adaptive\, and climate-neutral cities and regions. The fourth special stream focuses on building resilience in fragile settings and bridging the gap between humanitarian response to post-conflict resilience and recovery. \nAgain in 2024\, EURESFO will maintain its characteristic informative\, open\, and interactive ambiance\, upholding its ‘PowerPoint free’ format. Participants are enthusiastically invited to share their experiences and perspectives on an array of topics that delve into the challenges inherent in urban resilience planning and implementation. \nSave your spot for the flagship event on urban resilience and climate adaptation – register here! Stay tuned on our website and follow us on Instagram and X @Urb_Resilience for all the latest updates and programme announcements for #EURESFO24! \n  \n  \n  \n \n  \nAdvancing coastal and water resilience in the EU: encouraging the implementation of multi-level Decision-making frameworks\nEnhancing water resilience across Europe requires the analysis of coordinated decision-making frameworks for water management spanning local\, regional\, national\, and broader levels. This panel discussion will explore how multi-level decision-making can support robust\, integrated\, basin-scale understanding and coordinated actions for watershed restoration. This will be analysed through the experience of the Municipality of Draz (Croatia) within the EcoDaLLi project (Danube Lighthouse Coordination and Support Action). This initiative aligns with the three main objectives of Mission Ocean and Waters 2030\, focusing on biodiversity\, water quality\, and blue and circular economy. \nIn parallel\, Central Denmark is advancing the integration of Nature-based solutions within the Atlantic biogeographical area through their participation in NBRACER. This project seeks to implement multilevel decision-frameworks to enhance climate and water resilience across coastal\, rural\, and urban landscapes. \nMoreover\, existing planning tools that support these multi-level decision-making processes will be discussed. For this\, we will showcase the CoCliCo digital platform for coastal climate services at PAN European level and its role on the path of the City of Barcelona towards coastal resilience. Additionally\, the need of capacity building to enable decision-making will be highlighted through the UrbanbyNature Program\, a digital platform that facilitates co-creation approaches\, structured under a 7-step planning methodology \n  \nLocation\n Sala Martín y Soler \nSpeakers\n\nBernarda Matijević (Municipality of Draz) \nLucia Cuesta Fernandez (Barcelona ) \nPaul Sayers (Sayers and Partners) \nEtiënne Kras (Deltares)\nCharlotte Rosenkilde Sørensen (Kilmatorium) – NBRACER\n\nModerators\n\nKaren Naciph Mora (ICLEI Europe) \nCarme Machí Castañer (ICLEI Europe)
