Strengthening water systems and coastal defences with Nature-based Solutions in Fryslân
Authors
Xandrie Borgmans & Silke Nauta – Fryslân
Featured in the Mission Stories of Climate-ADAPT, this article showcases how the region of Fryslân in the Netherlands is reinforcing its water systems and coastal defences through Nature-based Solutions. In peat-land and low-lying coastal zones, initiatives such as the re-meandering of the Linde Valley stream and the creation of salt-marshes along the Wadden Sea coast slow water flow, boost freshwater retention, and reduce salinisation—strengthening resilience against droughts, floods, rising sea levels and extreme weather. By bringing together water authorities, farmers, nature organisations and local communities, the Fryslân projects demonstrate how collaborative, nature-based infrastructure can secure ecosystems, supplies and livelihoods for a climate-ready Europe.

Remeandering and restoring a natural water course for climate adaptation in France
Authors
Yohana Cabaret & Paco Lefrançois – Marais poitevin
Featured in the Mission Stories of Climate Adapt, this article highlights how the NBRACER initiative is remeandering rivers and restoring wetlands in France’s Nouvelle-Aquitaine region to strengthen climate resilience. In the Marais Poitevin, the restoration of the Vendié stream and surrounding wetlands enhances water retention, reduces flood risks, and supports biodiversity—helping farms and ecosystems adapt to shifting rainfall and rising temperatures. By uniting farmers, researchers, and local communities, NBRACER demonstrates how collaborative, Nature-based Solutions can turn restored rivers and wetlands into living infrastructure for a more resilient Europe.

The adoption of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) is increasingly recognized as a key strategy in dealing with the emerging effects of climate change and enhancing resilience in ecosystems and communities. The NBRACER project is working across Europe to promote regional NbS initiatives, share lessons learned, and replicate successful practices. A crucial part of this effort is effective communication—engaging stakeholders, fostering collaboration, and creating a shared understanding to support widespread adoption. This article explores how NBRACER’s communication strategy helps drive NbS implementation and strengthen regional climate resilience.
