Strengthening water systems and coastal defences with Nature-based Solutions in Fryslân

In peat-land and low-lying coastal zones, initiatives such as the re-meandering of the Linde Valley stream and the creation of salt-marshes along the Wadden Sea coast slow water flow, boost freshwater retention, and reduce salinisation—strengthening resilience against droughts, floods, rising sea levels and extreme weather. By bringing together water authorities, farmers, nature organisations and local communities, the Fryslân projects demonstrate how collaborative, nature-based infrastructure can secure ecosystems, supplies and livelihoods for a climate-ready Europe.
