Porto, Portugal – July 4, 2024

The Municipality of Porto proudly announced the launch of the NBRACER project (Nature Based Solutions for Atlantic Regional Climate Resilience) during a workshop event at the historic Quinta de Salgueiros in Campanhã. This initiative aims to enhance climate resilience in the eastern part of the city by implementing innovative nature-based solutions that restore climax forests, streams, and meadows.

The project is designed to address pressing environmental challenges while promoting the quality of life for Porto’s residents. Vice-President Filipe Araújo opened the event, outlining the municipality’s environmental strategy and the integral role of NBRACER in adapting to climate change. Participants were given an overview of the project’s objectives, along with a comprehensive bio-physical and socio-economic characterization of the municipality.

The day culminated in a guided visit to Quinta de Salgueiros, where attendees explored the diverse ecosystems and landscapes that the project aims to restore. This immersive experience served as a springboard for afternoon workshops focused on identifying the city’s primary challenges related to climate change impacts, as well as potential solutions.

“NBRACER is not just a project; it’s a collaborative effort involving key stakeholders in our city’s climate journey,” said Vice-President Araújo. “By engaging municipal departments, companies, nature-based solutions promoters, and universities, we are paving the way for sustainable urban planning that enhances resilience and quality of life for our citizens.”

With an investment of €17.4 million, NBRACER integrates six European countries, eight Atlantic regions, and 29 partners, setting a robust foundation for climate action. The nature-based solutions implemented through this project will not only benefit Porto but also provide replicable models for other cities facing similar environmental challenges across Europe.

The Municipality of Porto is committed to using nature-based solutions as a key strategy in urban planning, enabling effective management of natural resources while mitigating the impacts of climate change.
