Ghent, February 19, 2025 – On Monday 24 February 2025, the Flemish Land Agency (VLM) and its project partners organised an international workshop at the Flemish Administrative Centre (VAC) in Ghent. The meeting is part of the European NBRACER project and brings together around 70 participants to exchange knowledge and experience on Nature based Solutions (NbS) for climate resilience.
The workshop offers a platform for European and Flemish experts, researchers and policy makers to discuss innovative strategies for a more resilient open space. The focus is on concrete measures such as bank restoration, buffer strips and decentralised water purification, and how these contribute to the climate resilience of the area.
In addition to gathering feedback on ICLEI Europe’s UrbanByNature framework, best practices from demonstration regions such as West Flanders and Nouvelle-Aquitaine were presented to inspire other regions. The local context of the Flemish Ardennes is also addressed, with specific insights into pilot projects in Maarkedal, Ronse and Horebeke.
“This workshop is an important step in bundling insights from different regions and strengthening cooperation on more integrated and source-oriented climate measures,” says Fien Goovaerts, NBRACER project leader of the Flemish Land Agency. “Through knowledge exchange and dialogue, but also by drawing up strategies and jointly devising possible measures, we want to inspire policymakers, designers and land managers to get started with this in concrete terms.”
The NBRACER project is made possible with the support of the European Commission and is coordinated in Flanders by the VLM in collaboration with the provinces of West and East Flanders, VITO and Inagro.
